  The 25th Iowa Regiment of Volunteer Infantry was officially mustered into Federal service in September of 1862. Under the command of the distinguished colonel George C. Stone, the unit achieved commendable competency and dependability. After training at Camp McKean outside of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the unit was ferried down the Mississippi to join the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 15th Corps, Army of the Tennessee. Commanding the 15th Corps at the time, General William Tecumseh Sherman would have the 25th Iowa in his service for the duration of the war. The 25th had an outstanding battle record, with comparatively light casualties, on average, and an above average tactical success. Fighting in the Battle of Arkansas Post, the Vicksburg campaign (including the second direct assault on the Vicksburg defenses), the Chattanooga campaign, the Atlanta campaign, and Sherman's March to the Sea and the march through the Carolinas. After the end of the war, the 25th participated in the final parade down Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C.
